Volusia County to receive HUD Grants
Just under $3 million in grants will soon flow into the Volusia County to support affordable housing, federal officials announced this week. The money is one part of more than $125 million in grants awarded this year to Florida communities by the U.S. Housing and Urban Development department (HUD).
Dave Byron, Community Services director, said, "These federal monies are used for a wide variety of community needs," he said, "especially benefiting residents with limited incomes." Most of the money, about $1.9 million in Community Development Block Grants, will be divided among 11 Volusia cities and used for community improvement projects in low-income or distressed areas.
Slightly more than $950,000 of the $3 million overall award will be used to help qualified locals buy or rehabilitate affordable housing in the area. Another $86,000 will go to area homeless service providers to offset operating and service costs, Byron said.
Daytona Beach will see $1.4 million from the federal agency, with $821,000 in block grant funds and $613,000 in affordable housing money from the HOME program. The grant money will be used for housing construction and rehabilitation, capital improvements, public services and economic services.
