Foreclosures Still a Problem in Volusia County
In August, for Volusia and Flagler Counties, there were 1,761 default notices, scheduled auctions and bank repossession filings, according to the California firm RealtyTrac. That is up 56 percent from the 1,124 filings a year ago and close to the 1,783 July filings. July and August numbers follow the troubling figure of 2,186 filings in June, the highest so far for 2009.
"The numbers are steady, and more are to come," said Larry Glinzman, a spokesman for Community Legal Services of Mid Florida, which provides low-income residents free civil legal advice to include foreclosure assistance at the Daytona Beach, DeLand and Palm Coast centers. "We'll have a few more rounds, but with different people. We recommend that if people expect difficulties in making mortgage payments they not wait until they get a notice, but try and negotiate a new loan now."
There were 1,369 filings in Volusia County in August. That is 57 percent higher than the 870 filed a year ago. The county rate of one filing for every 180 houses ranks it 21st among the state's 67 counties. Statewide filing were up 41 percent to 62,401. Only California had more with 92,326. Foreclosure notices across the nation were up 18 percent to 358,471 in August compared to a year ago. That is a rate of one of every 357 homes.
