Volusia County Considers Development Plan
Volusia County's largest landowner, the Miami Corp, with title to 59,000 acres in southern Volusia and northern Brevard counties, has worked for more than a year to refine a development plan for the property. The company presented its plan for the first public review by Volusia County staff Thursday, to discuss 9 proposed changes in the county's comprehensive land use plan.
The proposed development calls for a mix of commercial, industrial and residential development in "villages" where people could live, work and play. It would include 29,500 homes. Miami Corp. would not be the developer but wants a long-term plan that guarantees wise stewardship of the land it has owned since the 1920s, said Glenn Storch, a local attorney representing the Chicago-based family land trust.
According to News-JournalOnline, "The proposal, called Farmton GreenKey, includes a number of sustainable growth standards, such as limiting development on the bulk of the land until at least 2025, requiring water and energy conservation, and tying job creation to housing construction. Storch said the plan requires 66 percent of the land to be set aside in permanent conservation before any construction starts, with eventual preservation of at least 75 percent of the property."
