Halifax River Getting Cleaner
Volunteers Saturday brought out 11.6 tons of trash from the 21st annual Halifax/Indian River Clean-Up last Saturday, 6 tons fewer than last year.
A $5,000 grant from the Florida Inland Navigation District paid for some of the materials for the cleanup. Keep Volusia Beautiful donated the bags. Hauling companies set up the trash bins and about $1,000 in Volusia County funds bought lunch for the volunteers.
Organized by Volusia County Environmental Management, 615 volunteers acknowledged there was less to do. Volunteers met at 15 sites along 56 miles of riverbank. At the Halifax Harbor Marina, they had to look hard to find what to put in their black plastic bags. "There's not a lot," said Fawn Chandler, 45, of DeLand, a member of the Daytona Beach Boat Club, 20 minutes after she started picking up trash. "Three beer bottles, a couple of candy wrappers and Ziploc baggies."
It looks like the green consciousness sweeping the country is taking hold in our part of the world too, which is great news for residents and users of the river - animal and plant as well as human.
