Volusia County's Public Transit System to Receive Stimulus Money
An $8.4 million boost is headed to Votran, Volusia County's public transit system, courtesy of the federal stimulus package signed by President Barack Obama.
The money -- part of $8.4 billion allotted nationwide for public transit -- will be used to buy several hybrid-electric buses and to improve access to buses for pedestrians and people with disabilities, according to a county news release.
Money also will be spent to make Votran's facilities more energy efficient.
"Now is the time to invest in infrastructure for the 21st century that will have the triple benefit of boosting the economy, reducing our dependence on foreign oil and decreasing carbon emissions," County Chairman Frank Bruno said in a news release.
The fact that our county is receiving direct benefit from the stimulus package to lessen our dependence on an oil-based economy is a great example right at home of receiving tangible benefits from the President's economic stimulus plan. (source - NewsJournal Online)
