Today approximately 40,000 people live in Ormond Beach. The allure of a Florida lifestyle is as powerful now as it was in the early 20th century: excellent weather, beautiful beaches, well-planned and friendly communities, and limitless outdoor activities. All manner of residences are available from condominiums to luxurious oceanfront single-family homes. On any day, you can pull a trophy fish out of the Halifax River, inland waterways and canals, or the Atlantic Ocean. Play tennis or golf at the professional-level courts and championship courses within Ormond Beach or in the surrounding cities. Camp, picnic, and hike in the woods at Tomoka State Park. Visit the Memorial Art Museum and Gardens, shop and dine at some of the area’s fine stores and restaurants. Residents and visitors alike say that Ormond Beach has it all.
Originally named New Britain after the Connecticut home of early settlers, the name was changed in 1880 to honor an early plantation owner. The next 20 years was a period of rapid growth, as the railroad moved south and hotels and golf courses opened. Early in the 20th century, the town was a play land for wealthy and notable northerners. John D. Rockefeller had his second home here, and the Vanderbilts, Flaglers and Astors all recognized and valued the quality of life found in the area. The first auto races were organized after the turn of the century on the hard-packed sand beach. In 1903, the car-racing legacy began with the Winton Bullet and the Olds Pirate, giving Ormond Beach the nickname “Birthplace of Speed.” Ormond Beach still claims the highest standard of living in Volusia County. Its quality schools produce award-winning results, and the medical system is second to none, with three major medical centers available.
