While Flagler Beach, like most towns in our area, has a lifestyle that makes it unique and idyllic, it may just be what it doesn’t have that makes visitors want to relocate here.
It takes a few moments as you enter the town, distracted as you are by the view of the ocean right at the highway’s edge, but finally you notice what isn’t there. No fast food restaurants, no huge crowds of sunbathers, or throngs of motorist and boaters. FlaglerBeach lies on a 6-mile stretch of flat beach: a small-town Florida you might have thought didn’t exist any more. Located 68 miles south of Jacksonville between St. Augustine and Daytona Beach, Flagler Beach is a narrow island bordered on the east by the Atlantic Ocean and on the west by the Intracoastal Waterway. It’s less than 10 minutes off I-95 and only 15 miles to popular Daytona Beach. Population 5400, the town is part of the growing Palm Coast Area, a twenty-mile stretch of scenic coastline that is a sportsman’s haven. Visitors, as well as those looking to relocate, are discovering the area’s lifestyle advantages: close proximity to resort and culture centers, tranquil waterways, subtropical forests and freshwater lakes, first-class golf and amenities, and the absence of the stress and fast pace of larger cities. The town began in the early 20th century as a small, seaside fishing village. Take a walk down its streets today and you’ll see much of that charm remains. The Historic District is a prime example. Many original structures have been lovingly restored and now function as bed & breakfast inns, or restaurants and shops. Everything is within walking distance, there are only 3 traffic lights, and casual restaurants and shops surround a traditional town square. The Flagler Beach Boardwalk and Pier are the center of many community activities. You can reel in a world-class catch or picnic on the boardwalk. The Intracoastal Waterway flows through the center of town, providing more opportunities for fishing and boating. For golfers, the courses of PalmCoast and The Hammock are just a short drive away. Designed by famous golfers and architects, these are some of the most challenging courses around.
